The true value of connection.

Updated: Jun 7, 2022

How do you define a valuable connection? and do you make a conscious effort to create and build new connections that last?

I remember having a "lightbulb" moment about the power of sustaining valuable connections about eighteen years ago now when I was working as a Nurse alongside some amazing ward staff. These support staff worked very hard transporting patients to and from theatre and picked up key pieces of equipment for Nurses and Drs to name a few. I created valuable connections with them as I had always believed you never really knew where someone would end up or what their life entailed.

I learnt very quickly the more I helped these support staff the more they helped me and this then created a positive experience for patients and the way this made them feel especially when our ward was often short staffed. When I reconnected to these staff years later two of them ended up working as Drs who I then sold products to as a sales of rep. The connection I had created all those years ago had left an impact and they then became some of my most valuable and consistent customers. I remember from that very day on the value I saw in making meaningful connections with all walks of life which was indeed an important lesson.

When you meet the next cleaner, bin collector or postie create a meaningful connection. Build and establish a rapport by finding common ground, making an effort to engage in conversation and keep in touch. Expand your network to beyond the usual people you would normally converse with.

Connect to collaborate.

Connect to affirm your idea.

Connect to inspire.

Connect to grow.

Connect to understand.

Connect to transform.

Connect to inform.

Connect to challenge the status quo.

Connect to create.

Connect to lift others up.

Connect to lead change.

Connections really do create environment's to thrive both professionally and personally. You never really know how a connection can impact you or the life's of others. If you look at connecting as a key cornerstone to creating value you are well and truly on the way to success.
